What a busy start to the school year! From the first week back we definitely hit the floor running! We ended the year by making the decision to have classes in Rummies five days a week. This means each group in Sixth Form and Lifebridge have the opportunity to work in Rummies. We are lucky to welcome Mr Young as a teacher in Rummies. His background is in Catering and Hospitality so he can offer an industry perspective to our students. During the summer holidays Miss Wood received an exciting email inviting her and Team Rummies to Yang Sing Cathy at the Trafford Centre. Yang Sing is owned by Gerry Yeung, the High Sherriff of Manchester. In the summer term, Gerry had visited our PE lessons and sampled Rummies cakes. As a thank you Gerry and his team organised a day we will never forget. We started the day by interviewing Gerry and asking questions about his business and role as High Sherriff. Next we were invited into the kitchen to see some live cooking and see all the industry standard kitchen equipment. After spending time in the kitchen, we were all invited to make some Dim Sum with one of the chefs. Everyone was impressed at how quickly our students picked up the technique. Once we had made our Dim Sum we had the opportunity to taste the finished result. Gerry showed us all how to use chop sticks, he definitely made it look easier than it was! After a busy morning we were ready for lunch. To start we had spring rolls and a beef dumpling followed by chicken and sweetcorn soup. The food was delicious! For our main course we enjoyed sweet and sour chicken, sizzling beef in satay sauce, mixed vegetables and egg fried rice. The food was beautifully presented and extremely tasty. To finish we had apple wontons and ice cream. Everyone agreed the food was excellent, the best Chinese food ever! Before leaving we took pictures and said thank you to Gerry for his kind hospitality. We hope to see Gerry and his team very soon when they come for lunch in Rummies. In September we held three cake sales! One in early September was to celebrate Roald Dahl day and raise funds for our hydrotherapy pool. During the last week of September we held our annual Macmillan sale. Due to the popularity in previous years we decided to hold the sale over two days. Both days were an unbelievable success and we have raised over £200 for charity. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed, entered our competition and bought cakes. A special thanks goes to our bake off winners 3A for their excellent cake entry. We look forward to seeing you all soon in the bistro to claim your prize! This year we have continued with our weekly Wednesday meals. We are looking forward to seeing our loyal customers as well as some new faces. As well as our usual weekly meals, this year we have started opening for lunch on Tuesdays to a lovely group of students and staff from Firwood. We are really enjoying seeing our new customers every week and we hope this new booking continues throughout the year. As always Rummies have plenty to look forward to! After half-term we are starting a six week primary project with Pikes Lane school. Our students will work alongside pupils from Pikes Lane to complete a cross curricular catering and core subjects project. Our students are excited to take over the role of ‘teacher’ as they work towards becoming young leaders. In November we are once again attending the Cake and Bake show, this is always a highlight of the year. On 12th December Rummies will have a stall on Bolton Market. This is a fantastic opportunity to show employers and the people of Bolton what Rummies is all about. We hope to see lots of our customers and followers on this day!
